To our friends and family,

This past Saturday, more than 200 people joined Gameheads students, staff, board, and mentors at Impact Hub Oakland to celebrate the genius of our young game devs and champion tech inclusion. Thank you to all who came out to our Second Annual Student Showcase!

The event was was an outstanding success: seven Gameheads student teams, including Team Heinous Minds, Team Remy, Team Gemini, Team Tastic, Team X is Essential, Team Unthanked, and the DevOps Team presented their projects on the main stage, and the event also gave friends and family a chance to play 20 video games. We cosplayed, jammed to a live DJ, ate cupcakes, and made lasting connections that will support our students for bright futures in game dev and STEM careers. Attendees also heard from keynote speaker Aleissia Laidacker, Interaction Director at Magic Leap, on how to be successful in the tech industry.

As we reflect on the event, we also want to take time to say thank you to our community of game devs, students, parents, mentors and volunteers, without whom this work would not be possible.

First, thank you Gameheads students for your hard work and dedication throughout the year and this summer, and to the parents who generously volunteer their time and efforts to support our young people.

A special shout out also to board members Alfonso Hooker, Lisette Titre-Montgomery, Marcus Montgomery, JD Yaske and Raymond Graham with a special thanks to Galen Silvestri, and all of our Gameheads mentors, for sharing your passion for this industry and providing our students with the support and feedback they need to succeed.

Thank you, too, to our vendors, including the Lumpia Lady (catering), Tutu’s Cupcakery (cupcakes!), Damn Good Teas (refreshments), Impact Hub Oakland (venue), and Change Consulting (communications).

Finally, a huge thank you to our sponsors and partners that made the Second Annual Student Showcase possible:

The article features Double Fine Productions’ CEO Tim Schafer, who also serves as a mentor this year and attended our showcase. Double Fine has the largest group of mentors working with our Gameheads! Thank you for your support.

We can’t wait to see what these brilliant young people come up with next year.
